Prologue:    
Susie was a dork who was not very attractive.  All the other girls would talk about their boyfriends and that they'd had kissed or had sex.  They were very pretty girls, at that.  Susie lost hope in ever finding one and decided to forgot about boys.  During the summer she took up a job.  Burger King was ok and she did get money out of it.  She decided to use the money to pay for her school lunches.  One day, on cash register duty, she saw a really handsome guy come up to order something.  He was there with a really cute girl.  "Wow," she thought, "I wish I could be on a date like them.  A date with someone cool, sweet, and charming would be nice.  Someone like him."

Chapter One: I Remember

School was fun for Susie as long as she didn't get picked on.  One girl was exceptionally mean to her.  The popular girl Lauren flirted, and dated, with practically every hot guy Susie had ever known and some she didn't recognize from other schools.  Occasionally, Lauren would date two guys at once but Susie knew dating two guys at once was not a very smart thing to do.  Still, she thought, if you truly loved them both and did not know who to date it would be hard.  On the other hand, she knew Lauren probably never truly loved any of the boys she dated.

Lauren loved to pick on Susie for several different reasons.  She found it entertaining, knew Susie was fairly ugly, Susie was a dork, and had not had any boyfriends yet although it was her senior year of high school.  Susie also never stood up for herself.  Whenever Lauren and her posse would pick on her everyone else would either ignore them or laugh at Susie.  She had no friends and her family was very distant and strict.  She felt totally alone.

She did not believe in killing herself though.  She always believed someone wonderful would come along and if she did kill herself she could never meet this amazing person.  "One day," she told herself, "I will get married to an astonishing husband.  I do not care if he is not the greatest looking guy as long as he is nice.  Although, I have to admit, it would be nice to get married to a really gorgeous looking man."

It was only the first day of school and already Lauren was causing trouble for her.  "Susie!  What a pleasure running into you like this!  I saw an ugly creature walking down this hallway and I knew instantly it had to be you.  No one can be as hideous as you are.  I figured you might try to look somewhat better over the summer but I guess it was too hopeless.  I would suggest makeup but I don't think that would do very much good.  See you later, ugly creature."  They started to walk past each other.  At the last second Lauren stretched out her foot and made Susie trip.

Her books flew everywhere.  She tried to pick them up as fast as she could so she would not be late to her next class.  A male's strong hand came down and picked up one of her books.  "Oh, um...it's ok.  I've got it."  The boy did not stop picking up the books for her.  Afterwards he handed them to her with a sweet smile on his face.  "Here you go."  He looked strangely familiar to her.

His blonde hair and blue-eyed face reminded her of someone she had seen before.  Then she remembered it was the same guy she had seen at Burger King!  "T-thank you," she stammered.  She could not believe a really hot guy had helped her like that.  The boy stood up and walked down the hall, passing the popular girls.  "Hello!" Lauren said in her flirtatious voice.  "My name is Lauren and, I hope you don't mind me saying this, but you look like my kind of guy."

He turned around to face her.  "Don't even bother.  Girls who are mean enough to hurt other girls like that are not worth dating."  Everyone there was shocked.  No one had rejected her before like that.  Susie looked up to him with hope.  She thought, "He might just be the first guy to actually notice me."

She looked at her schedule.  Her seventh period class was in world history with Mr. Morrison.  One section of the classroom was covered with girls.  They were surrounding a really cute guy.  She realized it was same guy who had helped her out in the hallway earlier.  Once the boy saw Susie he excused himself from all the other girls to go and talk to her.

"Hi, I remember you!  I forgot to tell you my name back then.  I'm Chandler.  What's your name?"  Her face got flushed and she said, "Susie," in a small, quivering voice.  "That's a cute name.  I don't know a lot of girls with that name unless you count Charlie Brown's little sister.  She's really cute.  I think she's better than Lucy.  Lucy is too stuck up, you know?"  Susie said, "Um, her name was Sally, not Susie."  He laughed and said, "My bad.  So, where are you sitting?"

She took a good look around and picked out a desk and sat in it.  The seat was in the front of the classroom and in the middle row.  The boy sat down to her left.  "You don't mind if I sit next to you, do you?"  His smile made her heart rush.  It took her a few moments to say, "No," because she was really focused on his presence.

"This," she thought, "is the kind of guy I want to date.  I'd like to date a nice guy who talks to me and helps me out.  Someone who does not like stuck up girls like Lauren.  He's also very cute.  I want to get to know him better."
